ABOUT THIS RIDE

What Big Thunder Mountain is

The Paris version opened in 1992 and is often picked out as the strongest of the Big Thunder family because the whole mountain sits in water, with the train visibly circling an island. Published speed is about 65 km/h. It is a family coaster, not an inversion machine.

The 102 cm minimum is the usual Disney mine-train line. It queues because it is photogenic and because it is one of Disneyland Park’s few outdoor coasters with a real drop.

If you are at the resort for Walt Disney Studios Park as well, this page is Disneyland Park only. The mine train is in Frontierland, reached by crossing the river to the island station.

What to expect

Multiple lifts and drops around the butte, with tunnels and trim brakes. No inversions. Night rides photograph well because of the island lighting.

Front of the train has the view of the water. The ride is longer than a typical steel thrill coaster of the same speed.

FAQ

Big Thunder Mountain questions

How tall do you need to be for Big Thunder Mountain in Paris?

102 cm is the listed minimum.

Does it go upside down?

No. It is a mine-train coaster without inversions.

Is the Paris Big Thunder different from Florida’s?

Same idea — a runaway mine train around a butte — but the Paris ride sits on an island in the river, which changes how the layout looks and how you enter the station.
