ABOUT THIS RIDE

What Journey to the Center of the Earth is

Opened in 2001, this Imagineering attraction spends most of its runtime as a dark ride through subterranean scenes, then launches into a 76 km/h outdoor sprint around Mount Prometheus. That mix is why it sits in a grey area between “dark ride” and “coaster” on this site — it is both.

Mysterious Island is the volcanic centre of DisneySea. The ride’s exterior is the mountain. If you are building a DisneySea day around one thrill attraction, this is the usual pick alongside Tower of Terror (a different park land and a different page).

Height rules are set by Tokyo Disney Resort and can differ from Magic Kingdom attractions with similar names. Check the official Tokyo DisneySea page for the current minimum.

What to expect

A long indoor story section, then a sudden acceleration into daylight. The finale is short compared with a full roller coaster, but it is the moment the POV is for.

It is a popular attraction. FastPass / Disney Premier Access availability changes; do not assume a walk-on.
