What opened on 19 August

NightFlight Expedition took paying guests at Dollywood on 19 August 2026, after a season-pass preview window. It sits in Wildwood Grove, inside a 44,000 square-foot, climate-controlled building. Dollywood, Herschend Creative and Mack Rides built it as the park’s largest single attraction investment: more than $50 million.

The published pitch is four ride types in one vehicle: a night flight over the Smokies, a whitewater stretch through more than 500,000 gallons of water, a ridge-running coaster section, and a boat crossing of a “Secret Lake”. Runtime is about five and a half minutes. Top speed in local reporting is 29 mph.

The height that matters

Dollywood lists a 39 in / 99 cm minimum. That is the planning number. It puts NightFlight in reach of a typical five-year-old, which is not true of most “new coaster of the year” candidates. It is also why the ride will eat waits on wet days and in July: indoor, long cycle, family-wide.

Mack’s rocking-boat system won Amusement Today’s 2025 Golden Ticket for best new innovation. The vehicle is supposed to feel like a boat that can also coaster, not a train with a water screen bolted on. Early operating notes from opening week are the usual new-ride ones — technical pauses, long but moving queues. Why this is the 2026 ride to watch

Family parks have spent a decade adding either toddler flats or 200 ft thrill machines, with a hole in the middle. NightFlight is aimed at that hole: long, indoor, low minimum, expensive enough to be a headliner. If it holds up through a Smokies winter, expect the layout language to show up in other Herschend and Mack conversations.

It will not trouble the fastest or tallest tables in this index. That is the point. The 2026 coaster that changes trip plans is the one a 99 cm rider can board when it rains.
