The year was smaller than the announcement cycle
Park calendars in 2024 and 2025 were stuffed with 2026 opening windows. By October, the list of coasters that actually took guests is short. The interesting ones are not the tallest. They are family machines, rethemes and one genuinely new ride system.
That is not a boring year if you plan mixed-height trips. A 90 cm coaster at Alton Towers and a 39 in indoor hybrid at Dollywood change more family days than another 200 ft hyper would. The thrill market already had last year’s openers — AlpenFury at Canada’s Wonderland, Siren’s Curse at Cedar Point — sitting through their first full seasons.
What took guests in 2026
Dates below are opening days reported by the parks or contemporaneous coverage. Operations change; the sign at the ride is the rule that counts.

The one that actually moved the industry
NightFlight Expedition is the ride other parks will copy-cat. Dollywood spent more than $50 million — its largest single attraction — on a 44,000 sq ft indoor building in Wildwood Grove. Mack Rides’ rocking-boat system mixes a family coaster layout, a whitewater stretch and a dark-ride boat finale. The published minimum is 39 in / 99 cm. Runtime is about five and a half minutes.
That is wet-day capacity with a preschool-adjacent height, in a park that did not previously have an indoor headliner of this scale. It is also why a “new coasters of 2026” list that only ranks height and speed will miss the point of the year.
Dollywood is not in this directory yet. If you are choosing a 2026 Smokies trip around the new ride, use Dollywood’s own pages for hours and the live height sign.
Rethemes still count
Canada’s Wonderland turned its inverted coaster — previously Flight Deck, and Top Gun before that — into The DareDeviler, with new trains and an aviation story. It is still a 52 in / 132 cm inverted ride, sitting under AlpenFury’s 54 in / 137 cm launch. Knott’s Berry Farm brought Montezooma’s Revenge back as MonteZOOMa: The Forbidden Fortress, the original 1978 Schwarzkopf shuttle loop with a new show building around it. Published minimum is 48 in / 122 cm.
Disney’s contribution was also a retheme: Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios now stars The Muppets, in the same launched-limo building, from 26 May. Magic Kingdom put Big Thunder Mountain Railroad back after a spring 2026 refurbishment. Those are not new layouts. They are the rides people were actually queueing for this year.

What did not open
Treat leftover “coming 2026” marketing as stale. Several headline projects — including more of Disney’s land-scale work at Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios — are now clearly 2027 and beyond. Epic Universe’s next Dark Universe ride is in the ground, not on a roster. If a park is still using a 2026 window for a coaster that has not hosted a media day, plan the trip without it.
The useful 2026 question is not “what is the next 300 ft ride”. It is whether the people in your group clear 90 cm, 99 cm, 122 cm or 132 cm, and which of those new-or-reopened machines is in a park you can actually reach.
