ABOUT THIS RIDE

What Space Mountain is

Magic Kingdom’s Space Mountain opened in 1975. Published speed is only about 43 km/h, which surprises people who remember it as a thrill ride. The intensity is the darkness and the small cars, not a 70 mph first drop.

It sits in Tomorrowland alongside TRON Lightcycle / Run. TRON is the faster, newer launch coaster with a 122 cm minimum. Space Mountain’s 112 cm minimum makes it the indoor coaster more of the family can ride, which is why it still queues even with TRON next door.

There are no inversions. The ride is a series of drops and turns in the dark, with a soundtrack and star-field effects. The POV on this page is the honest version of the layout without the darkness doing the work.

What to expect

Two tracks have operated over the years; what you get on a given day is whichever side is running. Both are indoor coasters in the dark.

Single Rider and Lightning Lane options, when offered, are the practical way to ride this without burning a morning. Check the My Disney Experience app on the day.

FAQ

Space Mountain questions

How fast is Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom?

Published top speed is about 43 km/h / 27 mph. It feels faster because the ride is in the dark.

Does Space Mountain go upside down?

No. It is an indoor coaster without inversions.

Space Mountain vs TRON — which should I ride?

TRON is a launched, faster coaster with a higher height minimum. Space Mountain is darker, slower and open to more of the family. If you can only do one and you meet 122 cm, most thrill-seekers pick TRON; nostalgia and lower height rules still send a lot of parties to Space Mountain.
